When the Honeymoon of the New Job comes to an end 💔

You passed all the interviews, you met all the people you needed, you made the best deal possible to make it work... and now you realize that it was all a hoax, that company policies govern the day to day and that all companies are the same. They say they are looking for innovative and disruptive candidates to generate organizational change, and then you realize that they don't want to change, because change is hard!

I crossed an ocean for this job, I applied and secured a job in the department I wanted to move to, I am part of the team and I like what I do, but the honeymoon has come to an end: I started to see the cracks in the newly painted wall and I do not like at all what I am seeing and of which I am now part of.

What is the Honeymoon phase?

It is the moment in which you start to realize that the new job is not for you, it is like any other job, or you realize that the effort you put into your job is minimal and that it bores you to death. And what do people do when they are bored? They look for another job.

Looking back, maybe I could have asked myself some questions before I took this step. Such as:

  • Were there signs and I didn't see them? If so, which ones?

  • Could I have asked more about the job itself or asked in more detail about how they work and organizational culture?

  • Are there relevant factors that make me happy to work that I didn't consider when I accepted this job offer?

So, what happens when you get into this situation? what should you do?

Now, you can't change your mind: quitting tomorrow might not be the best option because it would surely have a financial impact on you and your family, it might damage your professional image or reputation, depending on the personal and professional context.

That is why I would like you to consider the following steps before quitting your job:

  • Take the necessary time to analyze the whole situation. Making decisions in the heat of the moment is usually not the best way to go.

  • Talk to your boss, give your perspective and ask for feedback. Maybe the problem is based on a lack of communication between you.

  • Make a list of the 5 things you like the most and the 5 things you like the least about your job.

  • Share your thoughts and feelings with other people, getting feedback from them will help you get a better perspective of the situation to make the right decision.

Are you still unhappy? maybe changing jobs is the best decision - inside or outside the company.
